Target Abstract:
Oncogenic suppressor 2 (ST2), also known as IL-1R4, is a member of the IL-1 receptor family of glycoproteins that prompts the Th2 immune response.ST2 is expressed on the surface of mast cells, activated Th2 cells, macrophages, and cardiomyocytes. It binds to IL-33, a member of the pro-inflammatory IL-1 family with intracellular and extracellular activity. In addition to its mast cell-promoting and Th2-dependent inflammatory effects, activation of transmembrane ST2 enhances inflammation-associated responses and protects the organism from atherosclerosis and cardiomyocyte hypertrophy. Serum soluble ST2 expression levels are elevated during inflammation, including allergic asthma, sepsis, trauma, dengue, and lung disease. Elevated serum ST2 is also affected by multiple aspects of heart failure, including aortic stenosis, congestive cardiomyopathy and risk of cardiovascular failure and death.

Human IL1RL1 Predicted Functions
Predicted to enable interleukin-33 binding activity and interleukin-33 receptor activity. Predicted to be involved in signal transduction. Predicted to act upstream of or within negative regulation of I-kappaB kinase/NF-kappaB signaling. Located in cytosol; focal adhesion; and plasma membrane. Implicated in asthma and coronary artery disease. Biomarker of several diseases, including Human papillomavirus infectious disease; hemolytic-uremic syndrome; lung disease (multiple); paracoccidioidomycosis; and tongue squamous cell carcinoma.

Mouse Il1rl1 Predicted Functions
Enables interleukin-33 binding activity and interleukin-33 receptor activity. Involved in several processes, including negative regulation of T-helper 1 type immune response; positive regulation of macrophage activation; and regulation of cytokine production. Acts upstream of or within negative regulation of I-kappaB kinase/NF-kappaB signaling. Located in external side of plasma membrane and extracellular matrix. Is expressed in several structures, including immune system; musculoskeletal system; salivary gland; skin; and visual system. Human ortholog(s) of this gene implicated in asthma and coronary artery disease. Orthologous to human IL1RL1 (interleukin 1 receptor like 1).

Rat Il1rl1 Predicted Functions
Predicted to enable interleukin-33 binding activity and interleukin-33 receptor activity. Involved in several processes, including cellular response to mechanical stimulus; cellular response to peptide; and negative regulation of cell population proliferation. Located in external side of plasma membrane and extracellular space. Biomarker of acute myocardial infarction and bacterial pneumonia. Human ortholog(s) of this gene implicated in asthma and coronary artery disease. Orthologous to human IL1RL1 (interleukin 1 receptor like 1).
