CD38

HGNC ID: 1667

Target Abstract:

CD38 is a membrane-bound glycoprotein that catalyzes the synthesis and degradation of cyclic ADP-ribose. It is involved in cell adhesion and signal transduction. CD31 is the ligand for CD38, and their binding can induce apoptosis in bone marrow B cells but prevent apoptosis in tonsil B cells and promote proliferation of splenic B cells. CD38 is normally expressed in thymocytes, early B and T cells, germinal center B cells, and some T cells. However, it is aberrantly expressed in multiple myeloma cells, primary effusion lymphoma, and some chronic lymphocytic leukemia.

Human CD38 Predicted Functions

Predicted to enable NAD+ nucleosidase activity and phosphorus-oxygen lyase activity. Involved in several processes, including B cell receptor signaling pathway; positive regulation of B cell proliferation; and regulation of transcription, DNA-templated. Located in plasma membrane. Implicated in type 1 diabetes mellitus and type 2 diabetes mellitus.

Mouse Cd38 Target Information

Mouse Cd38 Predicted Functions

Enables hydrolase activity, acting on glycosyl bonds; identical protein binding activity; and phosphorus-oxygen lyase activity. Acts upstream of or within positive regulation of B cell proliferation. Located in cell surface and membrane. Is expressed in several structures, including alimentary system; genitourinary system; nervous system; respiratory system; and sensory organ. Used to study type 1 diabetes mellitus. Human ortholog(s) of this gene implicated in type 1 diabetes mellitus and type 2 diabetes mellitus. Orthologous to human CD38 (CD38 molecule).
