IL15

HGNC ID: 5977

Target Abstract:

Interleukin 15 (IL-15) is a pro-inflammatory protein that plays a role in the activation of neutrophils, dendritic cells, and macrophages and is essential for the development and survival of NK cells and CD8+ T cells.IL-15 activates the Jak/Stat pathway through heterotrimeric receptor signaling. Although IL-15 mRNA is expressed in many cell types, this secreted protein is rarely detected in biological samples. Recent studies have shown that IL-15 is retained intracellularly and can only be secreted extracellularly if it forms a complex with its sole receptor, IL-15Rα. The soluble IL-15/IL-15R complex is produced by mouse dendritic cells, fibroblasts, and macrophages, and its binding activity is 10-100-fold greater than that of IL-15 alone.

Human IL15 Target Information

Human IL15 Predicted Functions

Predicted to enable cytokine activity. Involved in several processes, including cell surface receptor signaling pathway; macrophage differentiation; and positive regulation of macromolecule metabolic process. Located in cytosol and nuclear speck. Implicated in aspergillosis; asthma; pleurisy; and type 1 diabetes mellitus. Biomarker of several diseases, including artery disease (multiple); brain infarction; lung disease (multiple); obesity; and viral infectious disease (multiple).

Mouse Il15 Target Information

Mouse Il15 Predicted Functions

Enables cytokine activity. Involved in negative regulation of cold-induced thermogenesis. Acts upstream of or within several processes, including T cell activation; lymph node development; and regulation of lymphocyte activation. Located in cytoplasm. Is expressed in several structures, including adrenal gland; genitourinary system; gut; immune system; and nervous system. Human ortholog(s) of this gene implicated in aspergillosis; asthma; pleurisy; and type 1 diabetes mellitus. Orthologous to human IL15 (interleukin 15).

Rat Il15 Target Information

Rat Il15 Predicted Functions

Predicted to enable cytokine activity. Involved in several processes, including cellular response to vitamin D; positive regulation of tyrosine phosphorylation of STAT protein; and skeletal muscle atrophy. Located in cell surface and extracellular space. Used to study pancreatitis. Biomarker of listeriosis and periodontal disease. Human ortholog(s) of this gene implicated in aspergillosis; asthma; pleurisy; and type 1 diabetes mellitus. Orthologous to human IL15 (interleukin 15).
