MMP10 Overview
Matrix metalloproteinase 10 (MMP-10), also known as stromatolysin-2, is encoded by the MMP10 gene in humans. This gene is part of the MMP gene cluster located on chromosome 11q 22.3. Mmp-10 degrades proteoglycans and fibronectin and plays an important role in the degradation of extracellular matrix under various pathological conditions. MMP-10 is strongly expressed in osteoclasts and most monocytes in bone marrow, is induced by cytokines in human keratinocytes, and is also expressed in human head and neck cancer and lung cancer cells. The overexpression of MMP-10 in the corneal epithelium of diabetic patients may be the main factor of diabetic retinopathy. MMP-10 is related to the viability and metastasis of tumor stem cells.
