VEGFC

HGNC ID: 12682

Target Abstract:

Vascular endothelial growth factor C (VEGF-C) is a dimeric secreted protein, a member of the PDGF/VEGF family. Translated VEGF-C has three structural domains: the middle VEGF homology domain (VHD), the N-terminal structural domain (prepeptide), and the C-terminal structural domain (pre-peptide).VEGF-C has an important role in lymphangiogenesis and acts on lymphatic vessel endothelial cells mainly by binding to its receptor, VEGFR-3, thereby promoting their survival, growth, and migration. Studies have demonstrated that VEGF-C is a specific growth factor for lymphatic vessels in a variety of models. In addition to its effects on lymphatic vessels, VEGF-C promotes vascular growth and regulates vascular permeability by binding to its primary receptor, VEGFR-3, or secondary receptor, VEGFR-2. In addition, VEGF-C is important for neural development and blood pressure regulation. Deficiency of VEGF-C leads to lymphedema, while excess VEGF-C is associated with tumor angiogenesis and metastasis.

Human VEGFC Predicted Functions

Enables chemoattractant activity and vascular endothelial growth factor receptor 3 binding activity. Involved in induction of positive chemotaxis; positive regulation of mast cell chemotaxis; and vascular endothelial growth factor receptor signaling pathway. Predicted to be located in extracellular region and platelet alpha granule lumen. Predicted to be active in extracellular space. Implicated in breast carcinoma and hereditary lymphedema ID. Biomarker of several diseases, including invasive ductal carcinoma; liver disease (multiple); papillary carcinoma; pterygium; and urinary system cancer (multiple).

Mouse Vegfc Predicted Functions

Enables vascular endothelial growth factor receptor 3 binding activity. Involved in several processes, including negative regulation of osteoblast differentiation; positive regulation of angiogenesis; and positive regulation of mesenchymal stem cell proliferation. Acts upstream of or within several processes, including cellular response to leukemia inhibitory factor; positive regulation of lymphangiogenesis; and positive regulation of peptidyl-tyrosine phosphorylation. Located in extracellular space. Is expressed in several structures, including alimentary system mesentery; brain; cardiovascular system; embryo mesenchyme; and genitourinary system.
