ITGA2

HGNC ID: 6137

Target Abstract:

CD49b, also known as integrin α2, is a 150 kD membrane surface glycoprotein.CD49b (integrin α2) binds noncovalently to CD29 (integrin β1) to form a heterodimer, VLA-2, or platelet glycoprotein Ia/IIa (CD49b/CD29), which mediates adhesion between mature megakaryocytes and platelets and collagen.CD49b is expressed in platelets cells, intestinal epithelial cells, NK cells, epithelial cells, and activated T cells, which play an important role in mediating extracellular matrix cell adhesion.

Human ITGA2 Predicted Functions

Enables collagen binding activity involved in cell-matrix adhesion and collagen receptor activity. Involved in several processes, including cell adhesion mediated by integrin; cell surface receptor signaling pathway; and mesodermal cell differentiation. Located in cell surface; focal adhesion; and plasma membrane. Part of integrin alpha2-beta1 complex. Implicated in several diseases, including Behcet’s disease; artery disease (multiple); blood platelet disease (multiple); diabetes mellitus (multiple); and von Willebrand’s disease (multiple). Biomarker of type 2 diabetes mellitus.
