Target Abstract: Cardiac troponin I (cTnI), along with troponin T (TnT) and troponin C (TnC), is one of the three subunits that constitute the troponin complex in striated muscle fibers. cTnI serves as the inhibitory subunit; it blocks the actin-myosin interaction, thereby mediating muscle relaxation. The cTnI subfamily includes three genes: TnI - fast skeletal muscle fibers, TnI - slow skeletal muscle fibers, and TnI - cardiac muscle. This gene encodes the TnI cardiac protein, which is specifically expressed in myocardial tissue. Mutations in this gene lead to familial hypertrophic cardiomyopathy type 7 and familial restrictive cardiomyopathy. Cardiac troponin I is used in the diagnosis of heart failure and ischemic heart disease. Elevated troponin levels are now also used as an indicator of acute myocardial injury in patients.

Human Tnni3 Predicted Functions
Enables several functions, including calcium channel inhibitor activity; calcium-dependent protein binding activity; and cytoskeletal protein binding activity. Involved in cardiac muscle contraction; regulation of cardiac muscle contraction by calcium ion signaling; and ventricular cardiac muscle tissue morphogenesis. Located in cardiac myofibril. Part of cardiac Troponin complex. Implicated in intrinsic cardiomyopathy (multiple). Biomarker of coronary artery disease.

Mouse Tnni3 Predicted Functions
Predicted to enable several functions, including calcium channel inhibitor activity; calcium-dependent protein binding activity; and cytoskeletal protein binding activity. Acts upstream of or within several processes, including circulatory system development; intracellular calcium ion homeostasis; and regulation of systemic arterial blood pressure by ischemic conditions. Located in sarcomere. Is expressed in several structures, including alimentary system; central nervous system; heart; integumental system; and sensory organ. Used to study hypertrophic cardiomyopathy 7 and restrictive cardiomyopathy. Human ortholog(s) of this gene implicated in intrinsic cardiomyopathy (multiple). Orthologous to human TNNI3 (troponin I3, cardiac type).
