IL5

HGNC ID: 6016

Target Abstract:

Interleukin 5 (IL-5) is a member of the hematopoietic family of Th2 cytokines and consists of 115 amino acids. Unlike other members of this cytokine family (IL-3 and GM-CSF), the activated form of this glycoprotein is a homodimer.IL-5 is secreted by Th2 cells and mast cells. The biological activity it produces on B cells, as well as other cell types, suggests that IL-5 has a functionally important role in the activity of Th2 cells.IL-5 stimulates B cell growth and enhances immunoglobulin secretion by binding to its receptor. It is also a key factor in the activation of eosinophils.IL-5 has long been associated with a variety of metaplastic diseases, including allergic rhinitis and asthma, where a large increase in IL-5 and a decrease in sputum eosinophils have been observed in circulating, tracheal tissues.

Human IL5 Predicted Functions

Predicted to enable cytokine activity; growth factor activity; and interleukin-5 receptor binding activity. Involved in positive regulation of podosome assembly. Located in extracellular region. Implicated in asthma. Biomarker of several diseases, including Churg-Strauss syndrome; Henoch-Schoenlein purpura; arthritis (multiple); asthma (multiple); and lymphoid leukemia (multiple).

Mouse Il5 Target Information

Mouse Il5 Predicted Functions

Enables cytokine activity. Involved in positive regulation of DNA-binding transcription factor activity; positive regulation of immunoglobulin production; and positive regulation of transcription, DNA-templated. Acts upstream of or within positive regulation of peptidyl-tyrosine phosphorylation. Located in extracellular space. Is expressed in colon; thymus; and thymus primordium. Human ortholog(s) of this gene implicated in asthma. Orthologous to human IL5 (interleukin 5).

Rat Il5 Predicted Functions

Enables cytokine activity and interleukin-5 receptor binding activity. Involved in several processes, including positive regulation of B cell proliferation; positive regulation of eosinophil differentiation; and positive regulation of receptor signaling pathway via JAK-STAT. Located in extracellular space. Used to study asthma. Biomarker of several diseases, including allergic rhinitis; esophageal cancer; middle cerebral artery infarction; peptic esophagitis; and prostatic hypertrophy. Human ortholog(s) of this gene implicated in asthma. Orthologous to human IL5 (interleukin 5).
