NCAM1

HGNC ID: 7656

Target Abstract:

CD56, also known as Neural Cell Adhesion molecule (NCAM), Leu-19, or NKH1, is a transmembrane glycoprotein with a molecular weight of 140 kD. CD56 is expressed in neurons and plays a role in the homogenous adhesion of nerve cells. In the hematopoietic system, it is expressed in NK and NKT cells and plays a role in cell adhesion.

Human NCAM1 Predicted Functions

Predicted to enable virus receptor activity. Predicted to be involved in commissural neuron axon guidance; modulation of chemical synaptic transmission; and regulation of semaphorin-plexin signaling pathway. Predicted to act upstream of or within several processes, including homotypic cell-cell adhesion; positive regulation of calcium-mediated signaling; and regulation of exocyst assembly. Located in cytosol and external side of plasma membrane. Implicated in bipolar disorder; middle cerebral artery infarction; and pancreatic cancer. Biomarker of several diseases, including acute promyelocytic leukemia; brain glioblastoma multiforme; cholangiocarcinoma; insulinoma; and ovarian serous carcinoma.

Mouse Ncam1 Target Information

Mouse Ncam1 Predicted Functions

Predicted to enable LRR domain binding activity and phosphatase binding activity. Involved in commissural neuron axon guidance and regulation of semaphorin-plexin signaling pathway. Acts upstream of or within several processes, including homotypic cell-cell adhesion; positive regulation of calcium-mediated signaling; and regulation of exocyst assembly. Located in several cellular components, including external side of plasma membrane; growth cone; and neuronal cell body. Is expressed in several structures, including embryo mesenchyme; nervous system; sensory organ; skin; and urinary system. Human ortholog(s) of this gene implicated in bipolar disorder; middle cerebral artery infarction; and pancreatic cancer. Orthologous to human NCAM1 (neural cell adhesion molecule 1).
