Target Abstract:
Interleukin 18 (IL-18), also known as interferonγinducible factor, is a proinflammatory cytokine that in humans is encoded by the IL18 gene.IL-18 belongs to the IL-1 superfamily, which is secreted and produced by macrophages and other cells.Upon stimulation by IL-18, natural killer (NK) cells and certain T cells release another important cytokine & mdash;interferonγ or type II interferon, which in turn activates macrophages or other cells.IL-18 induces a severe inflammatory response and likewise increases the production of β-amyloid (associated with Alzheimer’s disease) in human neurons.

Human IL18 Predicted Functions
Enables cytokine activity and interleukin-18 receptor binding activity. Involved in several processes, including positive regulation of cell population proliferation; positive regulation of intracellular signal transduction; and positive regulation of macromolecule metabolic process. Located in extracellular space. Implicated in several diseases, including Kawasaki disease; allergic rhinitis; autoimmune disease (multiple); biliary atresia; and hepatitis B. Biomarker of several diseases, including autoimmune disease (multiple); cholestasis (multiple); liver disease (multiple); lung disease (multiple); and myositis (multiple).

Mouse Il18 Predicted Functions
Enables cytokine activity. Involved in lipid homeostasis; positive regulation of cell differentiation; and positive regulation of cold-induced thermogenesis. Acts upstream of or within several processes, including interleukin-18-mediated signaling pathway; positive regulation of NIK/NF-kappaB signaling; and positive regulation of interferon-gamma production. Located in extracellular space. Is expressed in several structures, including back skin; dorsal aorta; gut; lymphatic system; and reproductive system. Used to study atopic dermatitis. Human ortholog(s) of this gene implicated in several diseases, including Kawasaki disease; allergic rhinitis; autoimmune disease (multiple); biliary atresia; and hepatitis B. Orthologous to human IL18 (interleukin 18).
